The Benefit of eBooks in Education

The popularity of eBooks has grown over the last several years, and is continuing to grow rapidly as more and more books become available.  What is so attractive about this particular form of media?  Why are more people turning to eBooks than ever before?  There are many benefits of using eBooks, some of which will be explored below.

Cost Effective

In most cases, eBooks are far more reasonable than their printed counterparts.  Often, books are subjected to damage that is irreparable and costly.  With eBooks, the price is right and vandalism is not a problem.  When teachers need to use a particular text for note taking, etc., the pages needed can simply be printed out and reproduced.

Sustainable

Our current social climate is calling for all things sustainable, and eBooks certainly prevent the unnecessary killing of trees for the sake of textbooks.  Over time, as the use of eBooks becomes more widespread, more and more readers will grow used to the format and our relationship with the text itself will change.

Media of Choice for Millennials

Most students in elementary and middle school right now have grown up with computers and the internet.  That being said, most kids these days are completely comfortable using the computer for all of their information, not just articles from Google.  Using a medium that the youth is familiar with not only works with building upon prior knowledge, but additional resources for enrichment and development of knowledge are at their fingertips as well.

More on the Way

As the popularity of eBooks grows, many publishers are deciding to make their wares available online as well.  As it stands, many texts have already been scanned and uploaded from libraries all over the world.  Texts over one hundred years old, like Bram Stoker's Dracula have been available online for years.

The Obvious Choice

Technological advances are constantly coming down the pipeline.  Most cell phones now can do more and store more information at a faster speed than most desktop computers from a decade ago could.  It is only a matter of time before the marriage between technology and educational resources come together.

Alex & Me eBook edition

This slender, easy to read volume is really about two characters- Alex and the author. When scientist Irene Pepperberg wanted to study animal cognition and language, she purchased an African Grey Parrot, who she named Alex. What followed was a thirty-year partnership that rocked the foundations of our understanding of animal intelligence and challenged all previous assumptions of the phrase "birdbrain." Pepperberg writes beautifully, bringing the study of language and cognition to an easily-understood level without dumbing down the impact of her work. Beyond science, however, Pepperberg captures the dignity and personality of Alex, a lovable and admirable creature whose early death was a tragic loss.
There are many funny and touching anecdotes about Alex as an individual who did not always choose to cooperate with research and had his own quirks, thoughts, and feelings.
For scientific information about the research completed with Alex, see the author's book entitled "The Alex Studies".

Beyond science, however, Pepperberg captures the dignity and personality of Alex, a lovable and admirable creature whose early death was a tragic loss.  You will be touched by this book.

And Nobody Got Hurt! eBook edition

This book is a very interesting and funny bunch of sports stories. There is a story about a animal running onto a college football game and scoring a winning touchdown! There's a story about a guy who ran through a plywood wall to get a baseball! There are a great amount of stories sure to crack you up!  If you like sports, you should definitely buy this book!  There's some hillarious stuff in here.  I gave this book as a gift to my niece who is a second grader. She said she really liked it. She is a sports nut and likes to play many sports. I wanted to encourage her to read over the Christmas school break, but she finished it already!

Just Listen eBook edition

Every now and then I agree to read a friends "must read" book. I am generally disappointed, but every now and them I am surprised and delighted. Just Listen was one of those delightful surprises even though I am not a big fan of "coming of age" novels. Annabel Greene lives in a glass house. She knows that what you see is very often different than what is real. Her life is full of examples: She has a loving family and good grades but she is miserable Modeling is not glamorous and fun and she really wants to quit Her beautiful model sister has an eating disorder Her perfect Mom has suffered from crippling depression off and on over the years Her former best friend is convinced that Annabel slept with her boyfriend even when she didn't Owen, the angry loner with whom she shares lunch hour is a sensitive, caring guy who uses his music to cope She copes by carrying on. She goes to school, she studies, she does her modeling jobs and tries to cope with her sister's illness. In her isolation she begins to eat lunch at a table with the other loners and a friendship develops between Owen and her. Her friendship with Owen and his world view begins to change her view of the world and her place in it. He teaches her about being honest and finding your own voice. He teachers her about managing her anger. He teaches her to appreciate the sound of music, and the blaring loudness of silence. In the end, Annabel Greene finds her voice and takes charge of her life. The characters are fully drawn and finely nuanced. The story captures the frustration and pain of being almost an adult while carrying a full load of adult secrets. I wish they had written books like this when I was a teenage! Here is the publisher's synopsis: When Annabel, the youngest of three beautiful sisters, has a bitter falling out with her best friend, the popular and exciting Sophie, she suddenly finds herself isolated and friendless. but then she meets Owen, a loner, passionate about music and his weekly radio show, and always determined to tell the truth. And when they develop a friendship, Annabel is not only introduced to new music but is encouraged to listen to her own inner voice. with Owen's help, can Annabel find the courage to speak out about what exactly happened the night her friendship with Sophie came to a screeching halt? del.icio.us Tags: ebook,.e-book,dessen,just listen,YA fiction Technorati Tags: e-book,e-book review,e-books,eBook,ebook review,eBooks, ebooksabout kdis

Great Story!

This eBook was written by a junior high student and it's excellent. I think that it would be a great book for teachers to use when trying to get their students to write. This young author is from a town with a population less than 3,000. He is presently writing his second novel.

It's About Color's

picalttag

'One Drop: My Father's Hidden Life' by Bliss Broyard. I read this book in three sittings - Plus, two middle of the night wake up's where I read for hours more. ONE DROP is not only a compassionate family memoir but it also opens the discussion of race in the U.S. What does it mean to be black in this country? What does it mean to be white? Does your race define the person you are? Broyard, also the author of the collection of stories MY FATHER, DANCING, deftly blends personal memoir with a thoughtful reflection of racial identity in America.
'Going Gray' by Anne Kreamer. Every woman over 40 could learn from "Going Gray." Just because hair is gray doesn't mean old and frumpy. Think Meryl Streep in "Devil Wears Prada." Those ladies of a "certain age" that continue to dye into their 70's and 80's are fooling no one. What a relief not to worry about roots. This is Definitely a Must Read! There is a Coupon Code at the end of this Blog Piece, so that you can receive a Discount on either of these eBook Titles
